Upgrading 11.5.9 base to R12.1.1: Do we need CU2 or not?

We have recently started the process of upgrading one of our customers environments to R12.1.1. The current version of the E-Business Suite is 11.5.9 base.
First thing we did was to investigate the Oracle Applications Upgrade Guide: Release 11i to Release 12.1.1.
This document states (Chapter 1, Supported Upgrade Paths, on page 1-1) that it is possible to upgrade from 11.5.9 base, directly to R12.1.1.
However, the text on page 2-29 (Prepare for the Upgrade, Step 4: Migrate or upgrade your database to at least Oracle 10g Release 2) can be a bit misleading. The text states the following:

Oracle Applications Release 11.5.9 (with CU2 applied) and Release 11.5.10 (with CU2applied) are certified for use with Oracle 10g Release 2, while 11.5.10 (with CU2) iscertified for use with Oracle 11g Release 1. If you have not already done so, you canupgrade your production database to at least 10g now, before the upgrade downtime.Follow the instructions in Database Preparation Guidelines for an Oracle E-Business SuiteRelease 12.1.1 Upgrade (Doc ID: 761570.1).

The misleading part (in a way) is the first line. The conclusion one can draw here is that is is necessary to first apply CU2 to 11.5.9 base before upgrading the database to 10gR2. We almost did, anyway. Further investigation in the provided note (761570.1) showed us that we need to apply the Interoperability Notes for Oracle 10gR2 database with 11i Applications (Note 362203.1), but skip the following sections:
  • Verify software versions
  • run adgrants.sql
  • implement and run Autoconfig
  • re-create grants and synonyms
  • apply Oracle Receivables patch
  • restart Applications Server processes

The first mentioned section (Verify software versions) is the section that holds the instruction to apply CU2 to 11.5.9.

In short, if

  • your E-Business Suite is at level 11.5.9 base or CU1 and
  • your E-Business Suite database is 9.2.0.x,

in the process of upgrading to R12.1.1, there is no need to apply CU2 to 11.5.9 before upgrading your database to 10gR2.

PS. It is not possible to upgrade your 11.5.9/9.2.0.x database to 11gR1. You will not use the 11gR1 ORACLE_HOME, which is delivered with your R12.1.1 techstack installation during the upgrade. If you want to upgrade your database to 11gR1, you can do so after the upgrade to R12.1.1 has completed.

  2. That depends, Harun. If you will keep the current configuration and upgrade it to R12, I suppose not. However, if you are adding functionality or modules to your current environment while upgrading, then it might very well be possible that you will need to buy additional licenses.

  4. q? in the upgrade doc, in section upgrading to r12.1.1, step 8 says to 8 is to run adadmin to put in maintenance mode, and step 9 is to apply AD 12.1.1 upgrade driver. From which appl_top, 11i or R12, do we run adadmin and adpatch?

  5. From the R12 APPL_TOP.
The accompanying text in step 9 says:
Download and unzip the AD Upgrade Driver for 12.1.1 (patch 7461070). Use
AutoPatch to run it on all application tier server nodes on your Release 12.1.1
    APPL_TOP.

  7. Hi,

Our client is on 11.5.9 and have planned to upgrade to 12.1.3.

Below is what we have suggested.

    - Upgrade DB to 10gR2 (11gR2 not certified with 11.5.9)
    - Convert to OATM
    - Upgrade EBS from 11.5.9 to 12.1.1
    - Upgrade DB from 10gR2 to 11.2.0.2
    - Upgrade EBS from 12.1.1 to 12.1.3

We believe this is the best path for this upgrade, kindly suggest if there is any alternate path to upgrade from 11.5.9 to 12.1.3

  9. Hi Farhan,
Step 1 and 2 are necessary.
Further on, this is what we recently did with a 11.5.10.2 upgrade to 12.1.3:
    1. Fresh Install of R12, including database (this way you can verify if everything works after the installation)
    2. copy the 10g database to 11g ORACLE_HOME
    3. Upgrade database to 11g
    4. take the "maintenance pack driver" that comes with R12 ($AU_TOP/patch/115/driver/u6678700.drv) and apply it with "options=nocopyportion, nogenerateportion". This will upgrade the database content with R12.1.1 specifics
    5. upgrade the application to 12.1.3 according to the maintenance pack for 12.1.3.

    HTH.

  11. Wow, that is a difficult question, because there is no such thing as a definitive guide to upgrading to R12, except the upgrade guide delivered with the R12 documentation CD. Start with that and take your time! You will face a lot of issues along the way. If you would need additional assistance, I might be able to help you via e-mail. Please reply in a comment and state your email address, so I can contact you directly. I will not publish that particular comment, so your e-mail address will remain safe in my hands... That is, if you trust me...
